THE ETERNAL OPPONENT, George A.
Hoyem.
This historical novel
will be in print July 1, 2010.
It begins in Korea
on Pork Chop Hill and Old Baldy in September 1952.
Two young men commanding infantry platoons and companies observe the
suicidal attacks by the Chinese forces against United Nations positions in
the face of overwhelming artillery and mortar fire.
They wonder why. Out of
the army they collaborate on a syndicated newspaper column devoted to the
subject of underestimating the enemy and/or the situation, and what this
eternal opponent has cost over the centuries.
They explore 14 examples from 1588 to 1951 of failure to consider the
consequences of rash actions.
Then, in contrast, they decide to describe some of the extraordinary
accomplishments of men and women in the face of great obstacles, from Africa
to Hudson’s
Bay.
